Resources
From your perspective, what resources are necessary for a substantial improvement in the dropout rate?
  1. More guidance counselors who know what it is like to live in poverty and with educational failure
  2. More time for teachers to be involved with young people not just test preparation.
  3. Smaller class sizes.
  4. Dropout intervention teams for ‘at risk’ students.
  5. More in-school activities that match students’ interests. For example, music and video production classes, clubs, sports, internships.
  6. More after-school programs and partnerships.

Procedures
What procedures need to be changed in order to significantly impact potential dropouts?
  1. Too easy to drop out; takes only 20 minutes to fill out the paperwork with parent
  2. School has to promote a culture of empowerment where young people’s voices are heard and respected.
  3. More relevant curricula; less test prep emphasis.
  4. Different relationship with Safety officers and entry to school procedures which dehumanize students and are ineffective in stopping weapons and unauthorized people from entering the building.
  5. Early warning system needed to identify which students are likely to drop out and to inform their families, teachers, counselors so they can intervene.

Policies
What policies do you think the school and the government need to adopt to curb the dropout rate?
  1. Make the schools more student-friendly; eliminate an atmosphere of intimidation and blame.
  2. Change policies on wearing hats and carrying Ipods and cell phones.
  3. Improve the physical environment and condition of the schools.
  4. Incorporate life skills classes into the curriculum.

Training/Professional Development
What professional training is necessary to prepare school personnel to curb the dropout rate and create a climate of mutual respect in the school?
  1. Teachers should have regular, refresher courses on youth culture so they know what it is like being young (and poor) in today’s New York City.
  2. Security guards need training in how to interact fairly, not in an authoritarian style with students.

UWNYC conducted a Town Hall meeting on Monday, January 29, 2007 with high school students from New York City public schools, who participate in UWNYC funded education programs. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss common factors that cause students to dropout of high school in NYC.

According to students, these are the main factors that contribute to students dropping out of school:

-Support: Student support systems are lacking, both at home and at school. They feel they need more encouragement to stay in school, finish school and to understand the benefits of their education.
-Role Models: Students expressed a desire to be exposed to more positive role models in fields other than music and sports. They are not being exposed to people with similar backgrounds who have succeeded and benefited from their education.
-Teachers: Students expressed that many teachers are not invested in their work. They feel that teachers often lack patience and are disconnected from student needs and experiences. Students feel that classes are not interesting or engaging.
-Peer Pressure: Friends and peer pressure are often a major reason for dropping out. Students want to hang out with their friends, want to fit in, spend time with their boyfriends/girlfriends, and become involved in fights.
-School Environment: Students feel their privacy is invaded by the presence of police officers, security guards, and metal detectors. School is experienced as a jail and not as a place that is safe and engages youth.
-Other Obligations: Students are obligated by priorities other than their education. They must care for a sick family member, work to support their families who depend on them, and they are unable to put the necessary time and effort into their education.
-Academic Problems: Students expressed frustration with facing past mistakes. They have low reading or math skills, which are not addressed by the school. They find bilingual programs are of poor quality and standardized tests make it difficult to pas subjects.

According to some of our youth, here is how the following groups can help students stay in school:

-Family: Family should provide support, discipline and time to youth. They should have a relationship with children, and remind youth of consequences.
-School: School should be organized and provide safety, guidance and encouragement to students. They should not push students out of school, but become involved with students, reach out to them, be informative and provide more in-school and after-school programs.
-Teacher: Teachers should motivate and engage students. They should get to know students, build positive relationships with them. They should utilize different types of learning techniques (i.e visual, group work, auditory, verbal, and hands-on). Teachers should make more of an effort to reach out to students and families with positive feedback, not just negative.
-Community: The community should provide more programs and outreach to keep youth off the streets, show students the consequences of their actions by example, deal with issues that are corrupting the community and provide mentors for youth.
-Government: Government should provide more funds, staff, and resources for schools. They should invest more in physical education, arts classes and peer mediation.
-Student: Students should be motivated, confident, mature, and independent. They need to take responsibility for their lives, learn from mistakes, believe in themselves, and seek support.

I believe Kadejra Holmes has been exposed for what she REALLY is. A RACIST who PROMOTES and PARTAKES in VIOLENCE. Oh Kadejra...How does it FEEEEL? Great video you took on the A Train!! Do you have any other comments to share to help us in society? Or do you prefer taking part in "jump up get beat down?" as you say??? You a racist and a bigot and now everyone knows.

Kadejra is a joke. She is why racism exists. As long as this monkey mob mentality exists that has absolutely no direction but to posture and grab at the government cheese, there will always be racism. The A Train video clearly shows these female monkeys swinging on the bars in the train eating bananas from KFC.

Good luck being a film maker. You can't even write a single coherent sentence. Blame the teacher's for your failures. Poor little victim. With this stupid stunt, you've just closed a lot of doors on yourSELF! Who are you going to blame for that? The innocent white guy?

Hey Kadjera,

Can you submit those videos where you strategically place those nooses around the city?

Ms. Holmes should put down the camera and pick up a book on proper English language and spelling. Good God! What a waste of oxygen.
